The Student Essays Database stores authentic written work by Lithuanian pupils from Lithuanian language lessons in schools where Lithuanian is the language of instruction, including texts and assignments written in class or at home, most with teachers' corrections and assessments. Authors' names are not published; only gender, year of writing, grade and location are indicated. The database currently contains over 7,500 works by more than 900 authors from different periods, the oldest from 1930. It is intended for research into literacy, education, pedagogy and cultural development, and also serves as a historical document reflecting Lithuanian schools under conditions of freedom and occupation. The database has been compiled since 2014 and is continuously supplemented with new written work. The project is carried out by the Sociolinguistics Department of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language.
